Miss Oliver was a very beautiful and cheerful girl. She was the daughter of the local needle factory owner. It was Miss Oliver who had furnished Jane's cottage near the school in Morton.
It seemed Mr. St. John River had some sort of special affection for Miss Rosamond Oliver. After she visited Jane's cottage, when she left, Mr. St. John was seen looking at her sternly. Then Jane noticed his face glow with some emotion. One day St. John saw a portrait of Miss Oliver drawn by Jane. He was startled and but he praised the portrait to be a realy good one. He held the picture for a long time. Jane told Mr. St. John that he should marry Miss Oliver because she liked him. At that Mr. St. John replied that he loved Miss Oliver but she would not make a good wife to a missionary. He added that he could not give up his ambition to become a missionary. Mr. St. John again looked at the picture of Miss Oliver. Then something caught his eyes and he seemed to be surprised.
Then Jane saw him tear a piece from the paper and hide it in his glove. After that he left Jane in puzzlement.
