It was a stormy night. Jane Eyre and Mr. St. John Rivers were having a meeting in Jane's cottage at Morton. In the course of the meeting Mr. Rivers held up a piece of paper. It was the piece he had torn from the picture of Miss Oliver drawn by Jane. In a moment of temporary forgetfulness, she had written her name as Jane Eyre. Then Mr. Rivers declared that his solicitor had written to him about a Jane Eyre. He asked Jane to tell him her real name. Jane told that she was Jane Eyre and asked Mr. Rivers what his solicitor wanted to know about her. Then Mr. Rivers declared that Jane's Uncle, Mr. Eyre of Maderia was dead and he had left Jane a property of twenty thousand pounds. Jane simply wondered at the prospect. Then asked by Jane Mr. Rivers told her that his mother's name was Eyre. She had two brothers; One was a clergyman who married Miss Jane Reed of Gateshead and the other late John Eyre was a merchant in Maderia. Jane discovered that Mr. John Rivers' mother was her father's sister and he, Diana and Mary were her cousins.

Jane decided to share her wealth with her cousins. She did it out of her gratitude to those kind people who helped her and saved her life. The twenty thousand pounds were divided equally among the four and each of them got five thousand pounds.
